You are here because you are trying to source a plastic part to be competitive.  There are several REAL ways to have the lowest cost part.

  • First, have a vendor who is accustomed to making that type of part.  Let the others learn on someone else's time!
  • Second, keep up to date on new processes and materials.  Gain a competitive edge by taking advantage of technology.
  • Third, look at more than one process.  Quote it as extruded and injection molded.  Or as blow molded and twin-sheet formed!
  • Fourth, remove cost by designing out material.  Core out parts so that they retain strength, but lose weight; but still maintain performance.  Use filled materials the same way; or, use a structual foam version!
  • Fifth, work cooperatively with the vendor to find ways to lower HIS cost.  If his cost is lower, your cost can be lower.
  • Sixth, tool it for lowest part price, not just for the production requirements.  Depending on the quantities used, not only will additional tooling pay for itself in short order, but if the molds come from overseas, a 4-cavity mold may be cheaper initially than a 2-cavity mold made domestically.

In short, it is easier to DESIGN cost out of a part than it is to squeeze your vendors, (even though some say it is not as much fun!)
